Great River Locations North Ireland

 

There are many Salmon, Brown Trout, and Sea Trout to be caught from many of Ireland’s rivers, with accessibility, availability and pricing to suit all fly fishers.

 

 

Rivers in Northern Ireland


River Bush: - River Bush offers top class salmon fishing to the visiting angler. Though the river is managed primarily for ecological research studies into the life cycle of Atlantic salmon, game angling of the highest quality is made available to the public on almost the entire river. Angling on the lower part of the river has been divided into several day ticket stretches to give the best sport possible, with a variety of methods available to suit conditions.

River Erne: - Excellent for its salmon and trout fishing with very good clean banks to fish.

River Bann : - The Upper Bann is a medium sized river noted for its Brown Trout fishing, which can be good throughout the season, but especially so when there are hatches of Black Gnats or Blue Winged Olives. Salmon and Dollaghen may be present in June, but it is generally later in the season before there are significant numbers.

River Agivey: - The Agivey River is a spate river some 15 miles in length rising in the Sperrin Mountains south west of Garvagh. The river runs through the Aghadowey on its way to meet the River Bann approximately 10 miles from the sea. There is an abundance of wild brown trout throughout the river system and fishing for these is best from late May until August when fly life is most prolific.

River Lagan: - The Lagan is a small river with an excellent head of Brown Trout. There are quite a few small fish but always the chance of one around the pound mark. The banks are refreshingly clear and the fishing largely fly only except for a few deep pools where worming is permitted.

 

There is fly life right from the start of the season and indeed the first four months offer the best sport.

River Foyle: - The Foyle System comprises of approximately 900 miles of salmon, sea trout and brown trout water. It covers the North West region of the north of Ireland. It is also one of Ireland's most prolific grilse and summer salmon fisheries.

River Finn: - there is more than 25 miles of salmon fishing on the river from Flushtown right up to Bellanmore Bridge and part of the Reelan too. There is good Sea Trout fishing at Liscooley and Killygordan and from Ballybofey to Bellanamore Bridge.

 

The best stretch to fish is around Cloghan and day tickets can be bought from Thomas McCreery on (353) 74 32075 or David Wilde on (353) 74 33003. Tickets cost between Euros 17 - Euros 30.


River Faughan: - The Faughan is a medium sized (5-20m) river well known for its sea trout and salmon fishing. Fishing can be productive at any time throughout the season although the best of the sea trout may be over by August.

River Maine: - The Maine is a wide river with a fine head of brown trout which can often give the best sport to the fly fisherman from April to mid June.

 

The Maine Angling Club issues up to 12 daily permits to people wishing to fish on their stretch of the river.

River Macosquin: - The Macosquin River is a small river which flows into the Lower Bann. The main quarry in this river is brown trout, of which there is an abundance. However, the river also yields a few sea trout and salmon in the autumn.

River Moyola: - The Moyola River is famous worldwide for its angling for salmon, trout and brown trout

River Mourne: - The River Mourne, flowing from the Derg Junction to Strabane, is part of the Foyle Fishery System. It is believed to be one of the best salmon rivers in Northern Europe

River Roe: - This excellent salmon and trout fishery is situated in the beautiful
Roe Valley Country Park near Limavady.  It is a great river for Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout.

Rivers in Southern Ireland

 

River Clare:- The Clare and Robe Rivers produce trout to mainly dry fly on summer evenings and sometimes during daytime. The Robe flows through Ballinrobe and enters Lough Mask, while the Clare flows into Lough Corrib, on the eastern side.

River Drowes: - This is a short river and is a premier spring and summer salmon water and not without justification as it can produce in excess of a 1000 fish a year. There are few sea trout but the brown trout can be very good.

 

The Drowes is the earliest opening salmon river in the UK and Ireland. You can go fishing here on New Years day if you are sober enough with the chance to be the first angler to take the  first fish of the year as this happens most years on opening day.

River Owenwee:  - This River is sometimes also known as the Belclare River. It is a small spate river, 3 miles west of Westport in Co Mayo. It is 11 miles long and flows into Westport Bay. It gets a fair run of grilse and sea-trout and the best fishing is in the last 2 miles

River Gweebarra: - The Gweebarra has a good run of spring fish during April & May, with grilse running from the end of June and good-sized summer salmon running from August onwards. The river also has some great runs of sea trout

River Duff: - This is a prolific little spate river for salmon. The Duff gets a good run of summer salmon and grilse. The fish start to enter the river at the end of May with the peak of the run in July / August. With good water levels it can fish through to the end of September.

 

There are 2 separate permits on the river at a very reasonable price :

A permit for the right hand bank, from the main road bridge downstream to the sea and 850 yards upstream (same bank), can be purchased on the river bank, Tel: 0868135429.

 

A permit for the section upstream of this and for the left hand bank from the main road bridge to the sea is available from Barrett's Tackle Shop, Main Street, Bundoran and from McGillan’s Supermarket, Cliffoney, Co. Sligo or from Eamon McSharry, Tel: 086 8162144


River Owenea: - The river has a run of spring salmon, grilse, sea trout and has a resident stock of small brown trout.

River Glen: - The Glen Fishery gets a good run of grilse and late summer salmon. It fishes from May to September with the best month being July for grilse. The Glen system is also noted for its sea trout.  The Slieve League Anglers Association controls the Glen River Fishery.

River Erne: - The Erne is fished primarily for sea trout though there are also the occasional salmon coming up the estuary.

River Lackagh: - The Lackagh is a short river of only 2 miles flowing from Glen Lough to Sheephaven Bay, which is noted for its good runs of spring salmon, grilse and sea trout.

River Moy: - The River Moy rises in the Ox Mountains and flows approximately 110Km (68 Miles) to where it enters the Atlantic Ocean at Killala Bay. The River Moy is rated as one of the best Salmon Rivers in Europe, with catches of between 8,000 and 10,000 Salmon annually to the Rod and Line.

River Feale: - The  River Feale is rated as one of the outstanding Salmon and Sea Trout rivers in Ireland. In a good season it is estimated to produce at least 1,500 Salmon and Grilse and well over 2,000 Sea Trout to rod and line.

Delphi Fishery: - The Delphi Fishery offers excellent fly fishing for spring salmon and grilse from February to September on a variety of lakes and a gorgeously pretty semi-spateyriver. This popular little fishery has seen record catches in recent years due to a Ranga-style smolt release programme. The ten year annual catches now average over 500 salmon.

River Erriff: - The River Erriff is one of the premier salmon fishing rivers in Ireland. A spate river, it is characterised by lively streams and deep fish-holding pools. It has 8 miles of prime angling water, divided into 9 beats. Beats are un-crowded with only two rods on most and a maximum of 3 sometimes. Angling is rotated on a daily basis.

Ballynahinch Fishery: - Ballynahinch Fishery is world renowned as one of the finest salmon and sea trout rivers in Ireland. The Ballynahinch Catchment drains an area of 68 square miles and is a diverse system of interconnected loughs and rivers, drained by the Ballynahinch River. The river is two and half miles long and has a prolific reputation as every salmon and seatrout enters the fishery on their migration through the system.

Screebe Fishery: - The Screebe Fishery extends to over 21 sq. miles. This is a private fishery with some fantastic salmon fishing to be had.

Costello and Fermoyle Fisheries: - The Casla River system is located approximately 20 miles west of Galway City on the coast road, before the village of Costello. The system comprises of 3 miles of main channel river which is divided into 4 beats. The lakes which include Glenicmurrin, Muckinagh, Rusheen, Fermoyle, Carrick, Clogher, Shanawona and the schoolhouse lakes are networked by 10 miles of river

Galway Fishery: - The Galway Fishery is a good salmon river and is now a state owned fishery. Salmon may be caught from February to August. Advance booking is highly advisable as it is a very popular location.

River Shannon: - This salmon fishery is world famous and still is one of the most prestigious fisheries in Ireland. It comprises eight beats which can accommodate twenty-four rods. This fishery gets a good run of spring salmon and plenty of grilse.
